Udyam registration: how to do it yourself, for free
Udyam registration is the government's online registration for micro, small and medium businesses. It is free on the official portal. This guide walks you through the steps in plain words. It is not legal or tax advice, and it does not say whether you need to register.
Step 1: Open only the official website
The official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. The address ends in gov.in. Registration on this portal is free, and the portal says no agent, app or private website is allowed to do it for you. If a website or person asks you for a fee to register, it is not the government. Do not pay.
Step 2: Keep your details ready
You will need the Aadhaar number of the owner (for a company or LLP, of the person who signs for it), a mobile number linked to that Aadhaar, and your PAN. If your business has a GST number, keep that ready too. The portal asks for PAN and GST details where they apply to you. You do not upload any documents. Also keep your bank account details, business address and a short description of what you do. The list can change, so read what the portal asks before you start.
Step 3: Start the registration
On the home page, choose the option for new registration. Enter the owner's Aadhaar number and name, and tick the consent box. You will get an OTP on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Enter it to continue. The next screen checks your PAN.
Step 4: Fill in the business details
Enter your PAN details, business name, type of business, address, start date and bank details. You will also choose the activity your business does. The portal shows a list to pick from. Read each field slowly. A wrong spelling now is annoying to fix later.
Step 5: Submit and save your certificate
After you submit, you get your Udyam Registration Number and a certificate. You do not need to renew it. Download it and keep a copy on your phone and in your email. If the portal shows a message you do not understand, use its help section or contact its official helpline.
